How to watch Rivian Gear Guard footage on a Mac or PC

Updated October 2026

Your Rivian saves Gear Guard, Incident Cam and RoadCam recordings to the USB drive plugged into the vehicle. Each recording is several separate video files, one per camera, so opening them one at a time in a video player is slow and you never see the whole picture at once. This guide shows how to get the drive onto a computer and watch everything together.

What you need

1. Take the drive out safely

Park the vehicle and wait until it has finished saving: if Gear Guard has just recorded something, give it a minute. Removing a drive while a file is being written can leave that file unplayable. Then unplug the drive.

2. Plug it into your computer

When a Rivian formats a drive it names it android, so that’s the name to look for in Finder on a Mac or File Explorer on Windows. You don’t need to copy anything off the drive first; you can play recordings straight from it.

3. Open the drive in Overlook

  1. Go to overlookcam.app on the computer.
  2. Click Choose drive or folder and select the android drive (or drag the drive onto the window).
  3. Your browser asks whether Overlook may view the files. Allow it. The files are read on your computer; nothing is uploaded.

Overlook reads the folder names and file names and groups the videos into recordings: Gear Guard events, Incident Cam events, clips you saved, and drives. Each one is listed with its date and time, newest first.

4. Watch every angle at once

Pick a recording and all cameras play together, lined up to the same moment. You can:

5. Put the drive back

Eject the drive properly (drag it to the Trash on a Mac, or choose “Eject” on Windows) before unplugging it, then put it back in the vehicle so Gear Guard keeps recording. If anything important is on it, back it up first: the vehicle eventually records over old footage when the drive fills up. See what happens when the drive is full.

If it doesn’t work

The drive doesn’t show up

Try another port or cable adapter. On a Mac, check Finder’s settings so external disks appear in the sidebar. If the computer asks to format or repair the drive, don’t: that erases it. The drive may need to go back in the vehicle so it can finish writing.

No recordings are found

Make sure you chose the top of the drive, or a folder containing GearGuardVideo, RoadCam or IncidentCam. Here’s what those folders hold.

You’re on a phone or tablet

Phone and tablet browsers can’t open a USB drive’s folders, so use a computer. If you back recordings up to the cloud with Overlook Plus, you can watch those on any phone.
